Christian Imagination - Redemption of Your Creative Thinking

Before the fall of creation, humanity had an untainted ability to think creatively. ”Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field”. (Genesis 2:20a) After the fall, God looked upon the earth with great dismay. “God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." (Genesis 6:5)

At the cross, God purchased the complete redemption of our souls and granted us the incomprehensibly great gift of the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:16) It is now possible again to think, imagine, dream and visualize a future that is in alignment and harmony with God’s will, purposes and plans for your life. The Holy Spirit now dwells within the believer, giving us access to the very mind of God! (Romans 8:27)

At times, our mental frequency will be tuned into heaven’s channel and we will receive ideas, impressions, thoughts, visions and dreams originating in the heart of God. These spiritual “downloads” are gifts from God to his children to increase our faith, enlarge our vision and move us in His direction. (Isaiah 55:8-9) The inspiration we receive to improve our relationships, share our faith and even solve complex problems at work and in our community is not a product of our own cleverness or intellect, but of God’s goodness. (James 1:17)

We open ourselves to receive these blessings from God as we spend more time in His presence by journaling, waiting quietly before Him and meditating on his Word. As we grow in our relationship with God through the Holy Spirit, our ability to discern God’s voice becomes refined and more accurate.

As we receive inspiration and ideas from the Holy Spirit, it is imperative to remain in a position of humility. One such way is to present our ideas to our community of faith, asking that they also consider and evaluate what we have received; helping us to discern whether our ideas are good, godly and in accord with sound doctrine.  

At times, our mindset prevents us from remaining open to the creativity and communion which the Lord offers in a given situation. When we approach challenges or opportunities with a natural or carnal mind, we place a limitation on our ability to receive divine input. Negative, self-sabotaging or self-dependent thoughts can all become blockages to the creative possibilities God offers for “everything that does not come from faith is sin.” (Romans 14:23b)

As we open our mind to the Holy Spirit, our world becomes filled with possibilities. We no longer look upon problems as insurmountable obstacles, but as mountains that can be removed. "Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.” (Mark 11:23)

Take whatever decision you are facing today and open yourself up to the inspiration and creativity of God, through Jesus Christ and the indwelling Holy Spirit. Be receptive to the ideas, inclinations and thoughts you receive, writing them down as a means of later evaluating them against the Word of God and godly counsel. May the creativity and imagination of the Lord pleasantly surprise you!  

“Lord, this day I open myself up to the Holy Spirit’s voice and intervention in my life. I ask that you would speak clearly to me and help me to remain open to your ideas, ingenuity and creativity. Amen.”
